Scott Brooks. American. Born 1961.

My friend and fellow DC artist Scott Brooks has for a long while been one of the best local artists but over the last few years his work has blossomed exponentially and he has been having a good run of national success. I can no longer think of him as a local artist, but one of my favorite overall painters working tooday.

Temptation of St. Anthony

I love images of the Temptations of Saint Anthony . Its one of the few subjects that historically gave artist the freedom to use their imagination in a unrestricted way. The subject still provides inspiration to countless artists today, but now its more an artistic right of passage then actually a comment on the christian myth. I have yet to make my own, but I am sure I will eventually.

In 1946-47 there was a competition (Bel Ami International Competition) in Washington, DC among eleven leading artist to make their interpretation of the subject. The famous Max Ernst and Dali versions (see below) come from this competition. About 10 years ago I found an original catalogue to the exhibition at a used book store for $1.00. I don't know if it's valuable I have never seen it elsewhere but it introduced me to artists like Ivan Albright, Eugene Berman and Leonora Carrington.

Kris Kuksi. American. Born 1973.

Kris Kuksi might be the best painter I know personally, but he made a name for himself with his insanely detailed assemblage sculptures. In 2002 I randomly found his work when i stumpled upon his first solo show near my house in DC. I loved his work instantly. He was unknown at the time but his clout in the art world is now exploding . I got this catalogue at the show.

I was in Germany and Prague with Kris in 2006. This is us in Prague with Adrienne Martino

On that trip I got this acrylic painting from him he was working on. You won't find this image anywhere else!
